Rachael Potts is Member of Nationally Recognized York College of PA SIFE Team

2012 Jun 7

Rachael Potts of Mount Wolf, PA, a junior accounting major at York College of PA, was a member of the College's SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team, which recently placed third in its league at the SIFE National Competition, ranking it among the top 60 SIFE programs in the country for the 2011-12 academic year. More than 150 teams competed at the May event in Kansas City by presenting their community service projects to CEOs and presidents of Fortune 500 companies.

Students participating in SIFE use business concepts to develop community outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. During this academic year, the York SIFE team implemented 13 projects in the York community, with a focus on the triple bottom line: people, profit and planet. York SIFE collected 5,000 pounds of food in eight months and offered professional development classes at local soup kitchens. Another project, The York Business Academy, offered business classes to York County entrepreneurs and has helped bring grant money to small businesses in York like The Pie Shop and Axel Mechanical. York SIFE's newest project is to help revitalize the stretch of the Heritage Rail Trail that reaches from campus to downtown York to encourage students to venture into the city.

Located in southcentral Pennsylvania, York College offers more than 50 baccalaureate majors in professional programs, the sciences and humanities to its 4,600 undergraduate students. The College also offers master's programs in business, education and nursing, and a doctorate in nursing practice. A center of affordable academic excellence, York is dedicated to the intellectual, professional and social growth of its students. The College helps them develop a concrete plan to attain academic growth and career success; encourages them to try in the "real world" what they learn in the classroom; and prepares them to be professionals in whatever career they pursue.
